In East Africa alone, 5 million people have a mobility disability and 90% of them do not have access to the tools and opportunities needed to live an autonomous life, sustain their family, and participate in the community.
The disadvantages accumulated in education, personal, and social development translate into a life at the margins: more than 80% of adults have no professional skills and are unemployed. This is even worse for women with disabilities, in a region where the gender gap index is 68%.
Lack of opportunities, not of ability, is the root cause of poverty and social exclusion of persons with disabilities.
